I have a very nice 1851 Stutzer that has me puzzled. I can not figure out what the identification letters mean. They appear to spell out "OUSSSTAHL" (though I'm not so sure about the "O" and the "L".)...

It looks to be comparable to the "W" in this table of "Double Line Century Script".

.............and yes, I am aware of the "Old Country's" way of creating complicated words. I've known of Liebfraumilch for many years! Frog

That is a W indeed, on the first pic it looked like Nw but when I rotate this last pic upside down it does not look correct for Nw. So a W, maybe that GW stamp are his initials, there are just too...

I like the way "Babelfish" translates the wine name to "Dear Mrs. milk"... Sounds like the salutation on a letter of condolence to Harvey's widow. (Sorry about that.) The only text on the lockplate is...

Frog I don't think this rifle to be 150+ years old because of several reasons, one is the pretty modern styled SIG stamp in German instead of French, second is the use of the word Gussstahl and a more...

............Just to be sure............. You do mean the 1880's, not the 1980's? :-) (I am easily tricked by some of these counterfeits.) The rifle that I sold to make room for this one was identical...

LOL... I mean the 1980's , they did not make patches like the above one in the old days. And yes I think it to be a private rifle that was made for muzzleloader sport shooting, SIG may only have made...

I think the proper term we are looking for here is "reproduction." Since the 1960's the large demand in the United States, and to some extent elsewhere, for safe and affordable historical firearms to...

Some more researching brought up the above, just don't know if the serials match. And this.... As well as this one. Guisan.

Since you showed it, Guisan, I have an original 1863 Swiss Rifle Musket at home (in case the Prussians come). I had been told that most of these rifles were converted to breechloaders by the Allin...

Well of the 34.506 M1863 rifles 7463 were converted to 1863/67 (between April 1867 and half 1869) by adding the Milbank-Amsler trap door, this was a temporary solution to get a breechloader fast as...

Thanks, Guisan. When I went home and looked it does have "von Ehrlach Thun" on the lockplate. It's good to have more information about it. I guess I can't sell it and buy a new car. Sigh. Bruce
View ArticleRe: Please help to identify
Well you can buy a new car I guess as long as it's dimensions stay within the size of some compact carton packing.... Guisan.

Hello Frogpudel, own the same riffel like you. My riffel has the same stamp "GW" on the Bolt plate. Many parts are stamped with the same "W". The only difference is the bayonet stud, which i haven't...

Aha there is just one gunsmith by that name. Ackermann was a gunsmith in Windisch AG between 1884 and 1893. Guisan.

Hmmmmmmmmm...... So I'm still uncertain, was my rifle built in the 1980s (it doesn't look that new) or the 1880s? Those markings on Bremgarten's rifle are all the same as mine, I'd say. Frog
View ArticleRe: Please help to identify
Well Frog, I never said that yours was build in 1980, what I said is that your rifle was not build in the actual M1851 era, it was made later and it is a private gun for sport shooting. Bremgarten's...

A private gun for sport shooting... with a bayonet? (A requirement to enter a certain class of shooters?) Maybe the bayonet holds some clues? The stampings all seem to be similar to the stampings on...

Does the bayonet fit the tube socket? I have an orginal "Beuret Frères" 1851 rifle with a "Beuret Frères" bayonet which is not even close to fitting enough to lock. I assume these bayonets were made...
